Ketosis is a metabolic condition characterised by high ketone body levels in the blood and urine. 1st Low glucose supply, such as low-carbohydrate diets or fasting, causes physiologic ketosis, which provides an extra energy source for the brain in the form of ketones. Ketones in the blood are elevated beyond baseline levels in physiologic ketosis, but the body's acid–base homeostasis is preserved. 

Ketoacidosis, on the other hand, is an unregulated accumulation of ketones that occurs in pathologic states and results in a metabolic acidosis, a medical emergency. Total insulin deficiency in type 1 diabetes or late-stage type 2 diabetes is the most common cause of ketoacidosis. Ketone levels can be measured in blood, urine, or breath and range between 0.5 and 3.0 millimolar (mM) in physiologic ketosis, with blood concentrations exceeding 10 mM in ketoacidosis.

When blood glucose reserves are poor and the liver switches from mainly metabolising carbohydrates to metabolising fatty acids, trace amounts of ketones are still present in the blood. Fasting, malnutrition, carbohydrate restriction, or excessive exercise are all examples of states that increase fatty acid oxidation. Some acetyl-CoA molecules can be converted into ketone bodies, such as acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate, and acetone, when fatty acids are rapidly metabolised into acetyl-CoA in the liver. These ketone bodies can both provide energy and function as signalling molecules. [4] Since the liver cannot use these molecules for energy, they are released into the bloodstream and used by other tissues, including the brain. It's often referred to as nutritional ketosis when ketosis is caused by carbohydrate restriction. A ketogenic diet is a low-carbohydrate, moderate-protein diet that can contribute to ketosis. Ketosis is a well-known epilepsy medication that is also useful in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. The potential impact on neurological disorders, metabolic syndrome, cancer, and other conditions is currently being researched.
